Program Notes
  • Segment 1:

The Continuing GOP Train Wreck in Cleveland

We begin with the drama at last night’s Republican convention in Cleveland where Ted Cruz was the skunk at Donald Trump’s picnic, deliberately refusing to endorse him amid a cacophony of boos which overshadowed the introduction of Trump’s Vice Presidential running mate Congressman Mike Pence. David Graham, a staff writer at The Atlantic, where he covers political and global news, joins us to discuss the continuing train wreck that the GOP convention appears to be to political professionals and the press, but apparently not to Donald Trump who seems to think that any publicity is good publicity and that his followers operate in an alternative universe that loathes the mainstream media and beltway pundits and are much less likely to tell pollsters who they are voting for so that come November, Trump will surprise the establishment again.

  • Segment 2:

    Mike Pence's "Christian Credentials"

Then we get an assessment of Mike Pence’s debut in the political big league and speak with Frederick Clarkson, a senior fellow at Political Research Associates who has studied the Religious Right for 30 years and is the author of a recent report “When Exemption is the Rule: The Religious Freedom Strategy of the Christian Right”. We discuss the piety of Mike Pence who is both a Tea Party and Christian conservative who as Governor of Indiana, signed into law a version of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act which sanctioned discrimination and bigotry in the name of religion and blew up in Pence’s face when the business community rose up force Pence to amend it which then infuriated Pence’s evangelical constituency.

  • Segment 3:

A Patriotic Millionaire Protests a Billionaire

Then finally we speak with Morris Pearl who serves as the Chair of the Patriotic Millionaires, a group of 200 high-net-worth Americans who are committed to building a more prosperous, stable, equitable, and inclusive nation. He has been in Cleveland for the last three days and joins us to discuss why a millionaire is protesting a billionaire and why working Americans believe that Trump, who refuses to release his tax returns, is interested in their welfare when they pay much higher taxes as a percentage of their income than he does.
